Reading

The Harcourt Trophies reading materials are used in all classrooms. Regardless of reading ability, all students read a common story each week. Using shared reading, partner reading, choral reading, and the book on tape ensures that all students comprehend the text. Phonics, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing strategies are presented in a whole group setting. Weekly tests assess vocabulary and reading comprehension. Periodic phonics, vocabulary, and fluency checks reflect student growth.

In addition, students are placed into small guided reading groups according to reading ability level. Text appropriate books and materials are provided to further enhance student success and enjoyment.

Spelling

Fifteen words are introduced at the beginning of each week. Ten words have a common phonetic pattern, two words are review from the previous week, and the last three are high frequency words. On Tuesday the words are reinforced and on Wednesday the students take their first spelling test. If the students receive 100% on this test they do NOT have to retake the test on Friday.

Second Grade Progress Report

The second graders are on Trimesters and families will receive a progress report 3 times a school year.  Second Graders do NOT receive "grades".  The children receive a 1, 2, 3, or NA, on their progress report. This is how the 1, 2, 3, and NA breaks down, (NA = Not Applicable-haven't taught the skill)

1 = 90-100%

2 = 70-89%

3 = 69% & below

Reading Fluency looks like this:

1 = 100 Correct words per minute or higher

2 = 70-99 Correct words per minute

3 = 69 & lower correct words per minute

Basic Addition and Subtraction Facts breaks down like this:

1 = 85-100 correct problems

2 = 55-84 correct problems

3 = 54 & below correct problems

Science

Science Beakers

Second Grade Science is divided into 3 parts.  Life Science consists of learning about plants, animals, and habitats.  The second part is Earth Science in which the students study land, water, our resources, weather, earth, and space.  The last unit of study is Physical Science.  Examining matter, changes in matter, motion, and energy are the topics covered in this third part.  The science curriculum has many inquiry-based activities, follows a nice K-6 scope & sequence, and correlates to the national standards.
