CAFE is an acronym for: C = Comprehension A = Accuracy F = Fluency E = Expand Vocabulary While meeting with individuals or small groups of students I focus on one of the reading
strategies listed above. The children are given specific instruction on what their focus is, it is modeled and practiced
before trying it indpendently. This way of organizing and managing my morning literacy
block came from Gail Boushey & Joan Moser, "The Two Sisters" and their book The
CAFE Book . This "system includes goal-setting with students, posting of gaols on a whole-class board, developing
small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and focusing whole-group instruction on emerging
student needs."
